That Are Better Than Sudoku

We all love Sudoku. It is satisfying, logical, and orderly. But here is the uncomfortable truth: Sudoku only trains one specific type of thinking.

Cognitive scientists compare brain training to physical exercise. If you only do bicep curls, you will have great arms, but you might throw out your back picking up a box. Similarly, if you only play Sudoku, you become a master of deductive grid logic, but you may neglect arithmetic speed, pattern recognition, and algebraic thinking.

Here are 5 daily exercises that provide a more "balanced diet" for your brain.

1. The "Equation Wordle" (Deductive + Arithmetic)

Imagine Wordle, but with numbers. Instead of guessing a 5-letter word, you must guess a hidden equation (like 4+3*2=10).

Why it's better than Sudoku: It forces you to switch between two brain modes. You need the logic of Sudoku (process of elimination) combined with mental math to ensure your equation actually balances.

2. The "Make 24" Challenge (Lateral Thinking)

You are given four numbers (e.g., 4, 7, 8, 8) and must combine them using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division to equal exactly 24.

Why it's better than Sudoku: Sudoku is linear; you follow a set path. "Make 24" requires lateral thinking. You have to rearrange variables mentally and try weird combinations (like fractions) to find the solution. It improves flexibility.

Try it: Play Make 24

3. Number Sequences (Pattern Recognition)

"2, 4, 8, 16..." is easy. But what about "1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8..."? Identifying the hidden rule behind a sequence is a pure IQ-test style skill.

Why it's better than Sudoku: It trains inductive reasoning. In Sudoku, the rules are always the same. In Sequence games, you must discover the rules yourself every single time.

4. Dual N-Back (Working Memory)

This is the heavy lifter. You watch a grid of squares light up while listening to letters spoken aloud. You must press a button if the current square matches the one from 2 turns ago.

Why it's better than Sudoku: It is scientifically proven to increase fluid intelligence (Gf). It is grueling, but it expands your short-term memory capacity significantly.

5. Missing Digits (Algebraic Intuition)

You see an equation with holes in it: _ 2 + 5 _ = 8 7. You have to fill in the blanks.

Why it's better than Sudoku: It builds "Number Sense." You stop seeing numbers as static symbols and start seeing the relationships between them. It is essentially stealth algebra training.
